CD REVIEW ---------- ARTIST: 24-7 SPYZ ALBUM: "FACE THE DAY" This is the latest release by the NYC-based funk-rock trio 24-7 SPYZ. Overall, this is a miraculously fierce rock project that easily surpasses "Heavy Metal Soul By the Pound"!! These guys must have been on some serious shit when they locked themselves in the studio to record this!! THIS IS 24-7 SPYZ as their finest! If "Heavy Metal Soul By the Pound" hit the Ritcher scale at 6.2, then "Face the Day" annihilated the scale at 20.5!! Don't get me wrong, they still have a couple of R&B ballads on this one and some funky stuff too...but the emphasis is definitely the hardcore, ferocious metal rock!! This is my breakdown of the individual tracks on the album: 1) UNKNOWN WELLKNOWN: Fast-tempo, heavy metal intro to the history of 24-7 Spyz ... be careful, make sure that you turn down your stereo to maybe Volume level 2 or 3. Volume 10 will blast out windows within a five-mile radius!! 2) FACE THE DAY: Funky hardcore metal sound...blazing lead guitar rock by Jimi Hazel and smolderin' bass lines by Rick Skatore! This is a message song meant to encourage you when things are gettin' tough. 3) WAITING FOR THE SUN: Continues with the funk-rock nastiness, with a blazing lead guitar solo! 4) SOUL SUCKER: More funk-rock heaviness with revving guitar riffs during the choruses. Drummer Tobias Ralph shows off some tight drumming skills here. 5) RIDE TO NOWHERE: More of the same funk-rock heaviness. 6) FAITHLESS: The band slowed it down with a nice midtempo R&B ballad. 7) THE SATURDAY SONG: Tender love ballad about how Jimi met his wife...R&B stuff with a passionate lead guitar solo! 8) ANGEL: Reminds me a little of the 24-7 Spyz's "Crushonya" (the feel)...great R&B ballad with splashes of guitar rock! 9) BLUES FOR DIMEBAG: This is a track dedicated to a dear friend of the Spyz who passed away a little while ago. This is NOT a blues track, but this is a Funkadelic fan's dream (take notes, George Clinton)...heavy, electrifying guitar rock...the ferocious guitar riffs rip the air to pieces!!! This is some stuff that would impress the hell out of Eddie Hazel and Jimi Hendrix!! 10) RUNNING: Different type of sound for 24-7 Spyz...double-time, fast-tempo funk! The lead guitar solo in the middle is just spectacular, as well as the funky rhythm guitar scratching during most of the song and the standout, odorious bass licks during the lead guitar solo!! 11) ANYTHING FOR YOU: Fast-tempo love song merged with kinetic guitar rock!! 12) PLASTIQUE: FUNK!! FUNK!! FUNK!! A song about the women who are obsessed with plastic surgery (botox injections, liposuction, breast enhancements, rhinoplasty, etc.) Thumpin' bass rules on this song as well as the funky rhythm guitar riffs! 13) BAD REPUTATION: Back to the metal rock sound, this song profits from the bone-crushing bass riffs and the diabolic lead guitar riffing, especially during the last four minutes...this is the jam portion where the lead guitar riffs set the stratosphere on fire...Funkadelic fans would definitely love this!! By the day, it doesn't hurt that Tobias on working the hell out of those drums...talk about some seriously busy drumming, Tobias is breaking it down for the entire length of this song. 14) STAND!: The guys slowed it down just a little to perform this R&B staple, originally by Sly & the Family Stone. A well-done cover of this famous song that features a guest vocal spot by King's X frontman/bassist Doug Pinnick! GO OUT AND BUY THIS CD!!!! IF YOU DON'T GET THIS CD, YOU ARE SERIOUSLY MISSING OUT ON SOMETHING GREAT!! IF YOU HEARD SOME OF THIS HOT TRACKS AND YOU'RE NOT FEELIN' IT, YOU MAY HAVE A PULSE RATE OF ZERO!!!
