CLONES OF FUNK
At the Eastport Clipper - Annapolis, MD (5/03/03)

The smokin' Terre Holland, GROOVALICIOUS and Jerry Queene!!!

This was a special evening because filling in for the Clones of Funk guitarist Hot Rod was two special guests from the NAPPYHEAD FUNK ARMY. Those 2 guys were Clones alumnus Andy Lassalle and John Willis (better known as Groovalicious)!! Folks were treated to a dose of the New York City funk, as these guys burned the Clipper to the ground with super-fiery guitar power!!!

At 10:10pm, the Clones of Funk began their first set with some "P-Funk (Wants Get to Funked Up)".....a funky groove with some good sax work by Jerry Queene! The bad part was the seguing into "Mothership Connection".....it was pretty sloppy with the band seemingly starting "Mothership Connection" on a higher note than normal. The sax riffs were on-point on "Mothership Connection", but it was missing the trumpet riffs of Mike, who could not make the show! Again, there was a sloppy change into "Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples".....Scrape was the one who verbally acknowledged the mistakes. "Thumpasorus Peoples" was void of "Ga ga goo ga"'s and featured the lyrics of "Children of Production".....of course, Wesley Beann and Scrape were on-point on vocal harmonies! Nasty lead guitarisms filled in the air, courtesy of Andy Lassalle on "Red Hot Momma".....bad boy on bass Terre Holland smoked and so did the powerful drumming of Mark Brown!!! The band did "Undisco Kidd" over "Red Hot Momma" and Terre's bass were still smokin' the joint! "Theme From the Black Hole" and "Aqua Boogie" were great because of the vocal prowess of the dynamic duo, Wesley and Scrape!! Rhythm guitarisms were oh-so-funky on "Tear the Roof Off the Sucka/Psychoticbumpschool", courtesy of Groovalicious!! The first set ended at 11:35pm.

At 12:00 midnight, the second Clones of Funk set started with something unexpected....."Dog Star"!! It was a super-powerful blend of guitar and bass rock, courtesy of the masters Andy, Groovalicious and Terre!!! "Up For the Down Stroke" featured some good sax by Jerry and funky scratch guitarisms by Groovalicious! "Up For the Down Stroke" included portions of "I Can Move You (If You Let Me)", "Take Your Dead Ass Home" and a chant from the "Pinocchio Theory", baba! "Cosmic Slop" was great, and so was "Better By the Pound" and "Everything is On the One". There was a rapper on the set, but I don't remember WHERE in the setthis guy performed. Funky sax riffs were all over the super-long version of "Flashlight",which included a bit of "Electric Spanking of War Babies"....(I'm gonna call Wesley "GC" because he can really sound like George Clinton on a good day!) The funk on "Unfunky UFO" was too strong!

THE BEST SONG?? "MAGGOT BRAIN"!!!!!! IT WAS MAGICAL TO HEAR THE TRULY PYROTECHNIC LEAD GUITAR SOLOS OF GROOVALICIOUS AND EQUALLY DEVASTATING LEAD GUITAR SOLOING OF ANDY LASSALLE!!! IT WAS LIKE THE HEAVENS OPENED UP AND POURED OUT A FUNK BLESSING UPON EVERY FUNKATEER IN DA HOUSE!!!!!!

The second set ended at 1:35am.
