CLONES OF FUNK
At the Takoma Station Tavern in Washington, DC - 6/22/01

At 10:10pm, the Clones of Funk started their funky first set with "Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples"......this song was so FUNKY, thanks to the stank-ass synthesizerisms of Gene McBride (yes....the original Clones of Funk keyboardist came back for this one show), the hot sax riffs by guest saxophonist Britt, and the the moments of tight, powerful drumming of Tom (a/k/a "Smack Daddy")!! The lead vocalists, Wesley Beann & Lamont "Scrape" Randall, came out during this song. The red-hot, fiery guitar solo by Hot Rod was the shit on "Red Hot Momma", which included some of the song "Undisco Kidd"!! Gene's keyboardisms smoked on the Kool & the Gang classic "Jungle Boogie"!! An acapella version of the chorus "If Anybody Gets Funked Up (It's Gonna Be You)" was followed by the ultimate Funkadelic rock song, "Cosmic Slop"!! "Tear the Roof Off The Sucka","Theme From the Black Hole", and "Dr. Funkenstein" were among the last few songs that ended the first set at 11:40pm.

The crowd was basically 50% black and 50% white, with most of the folks in their middle age range.......the place must have been 60% packed.

The Clones of Funk started their second set at 12:15am with some "P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)", followed by "Mothership Connection".....with some funky synthesizer riffs by Gene!! "Standing on the Verge of Gettin' It On" and "Up For the Down Stroke" were great....the latter being so FUNKY, thanks to the heavy bassisms of guest bassist, Judd! "Up For the Down Stroke" included the song "I Can Move You (If You Let Me)"!! "Maggot Brain" was the definite highlight of the second set (a potent mix of psychedelic rock), with a gutbucket bass solo, a pyrotechnic guitar solo, and an earth-shaking drum solo!! "Flashlight" was super-long, with a snippet of "Electric Spanking of War Babies"! "Atomic Dog" and "Theme From the Black Hole" preceded the last song, a medley of "I Got a Thang, You Got a Thang, Everybody's Got a Thang" and "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow"! The show included chants from Bootsy's "Landshark" ("Shake what you brought with ya, you know where it's gonna get ya") and Jimmy G & the Tackheads's "Slingshot" mixed with P-Funk Allstars's "All Sons of Bitches" ("I gotta get down, I gotta get down, let's take to the bridge like James Brown......we're funkin' at street level")! The second set ended at 2:05am.
