DR. JOHN

At B.B. King's Blues Club - NYC (2/21/03)

At 8:20pm, the N'awlins bluesy-funk extravaganza began with the legendary keyboardist/singer Dr. John!!!!! The band started off with some of that N'awlins party flavor....."Iko Iko"!! Dr. John came out and enticed every ear with some of that flavorful piano riffs!! The song was a hilarious blues cut called "Why Don't My Dog Bark When You Come Around?" (correct me, if I am wrong!) Standout funky bass riffs were the order on "Walk on Gilded Splinters".....also great was the hot lead guitar solo and Dr. John's work on percussion midway through the song.....interesting enough, there were some ear-pleasing spaced-out sound effects on guitar (?) during the Dr.'s percussion work!! The bass and organ worked in perfect, funky harmony on "It Don't Mean a Thing, If It Ain't Got That Swing"!!! "Junko Partner" was a good song, but it really needs some baritone sax to add some punch to it. The band even got down to a Professor Longhair original. The drumming was good,

but the best part of the show was the special guest appearance of the one and only Maggot Brain Overlord, GEORGE CLINTON!!!!!! George and Dr. John worked the crowd, with George gettin' folks to chant "We want the funk, give up the funk", "I got a thang, you got a thang, everybody's got a thang", and other P-Funk references!!! EVVVVVVVVVVVVER FUNKIN' ON, BABA!!!!!!!!!!!

The first set was over at 9:40pm.
