THE FUNK BROTHERS

At B.B. King's Blues - NYC (2/18/05)

Jack Ashford, O.G. Funk Brother!!!

At 10:50pm, the Funk Brothers (featuring original members Jack Ashford on percussion/vibes and Joe Hunter on keyboards) began their set with some Motown magic called "Get Ready" (originally by The Temptations)....featuring some tamborine work by Mr. Jack Ashford! The band went into a Miles Davis groove called "Bag's Brew", featuring a great saxophone moment and funky keyboardisms by Joe Hunter. The bass groove was interesting on Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed & Delivered" but better was the female lead vocal performance on Gladys Knight & The Pips's "Neither One of Us"! Martha Reeves & the Vandellas's "Dancin' in the Streets" was followed by The Temptations's "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" featuring Jack on tamborine. Smokey Robinson & the Miracles's "Ooh Baby Baby" was followed by the monumental song of the day, Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" (and that song is definitely true....what is going on with this nation TODAY??!!)

Joe Hunter, O.G. Funk Brother!!!

For The Temptations's "My Girl", about 20 people were invited to the stage to dance and sing along with the group...a few lucky women got a chance to sing the first verse. Everyone finally got out of their seats and danced to Marvin Gaye's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". The final Motown treat was the funky Junior Walker and the Allstars's "Shotgun", featuring the funky hornz. The Funk Brothers ended their set around 12:30am.
