FUNK BROTHERS MOTOWN DANCE PARTY

At the Prince Music Theatre - Philly (5/18/03)

Jack Ashford & Dr. Brookenstein

The Motown Dance Party kicked off at 9:30pm with some of the backing musicians that performed with the Funk Brothers on the set of the movie that honored them, STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN. The dance party featured R&B tunes like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Reach Out (I'll Be There)", "What's Goin' On", "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted", "Shotgun", "Here Comes the Judge", "Ooh Baby Baby", "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" (originally by McFadden & Whitehead), "Boogie Oogie Oogie" (originally by A Taste of Honey), "Stop in the Name of Love", "Bernadette" and "My Girl".

Bob Babbitt & Dr. Brookenstein

The highlights were (from what I remember):

1.I was walking upstairs from the lobby when I heard the funky, funky basswork of Bob Babbitt and the tamborine vibe of Jack Ashford on "Shotgun"!

2.There was a guest female lead vocalist on "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" who sounded very good! The horn players were also excellent!

3.Alan Slutsky did at least a couple of great lead guitar solos during the set (I just don't remember which songs)!
