MINGO FISHTRAP

At the Grape Street - Philly (11/2/05)

At 12:05am, Austin, Texas based funk band MINGO FISHTRAP started their set by entering the club from the front entrance, strapped with marching drums & horns, like a New Orleans marching band. The first song performed was in the vein of a Tower of Power funk jam, with some funky, bold horn playing by Steven Butts (trumpet), Greg Wilson (baritone saxophone) , "Peanut Butter" (saxophone), and Mark Gonzales (trombone)....also, the drumming by Peter Thomas was tight! The next song featured a piece of Dr. John's classic "Iko Iko" and Robert Randolph's "I Need More Love"....the guitar solo by Roger Blevins, Jr. was great and the churning organ riffs by Aeron Riordon were also great! Mingo Fishtrap performed a song that sounded like some Neville Brothers stuff....it sounded like the Nevilles tune "Brother John" and even included a full verse from the Meters song, "They All Ask'd For You". "Catch The Bus" featured some great bass funk by Roger Blevins, Sr. "Dirty Gritty" was one of the remaining songs that ended the set at 1:15am.
