I met Zack
Roberson (leader of Nappyhead) backstage and he was very appreciative that I
came out for the show. I was able to get a couple of group photos of Nappyhead.
Interesting enough, MC Moe only stayed for one rap song, "Fread is
Dead". Also, this is the first time that I sawPat D'Auria play bass, and
she is definitely good!
At
12:15am, Nappyhead started their set with Zack doing the introductory speech to
"P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)". The highlight of the show is the
band's performance of "Stretchin' Out in a Rubber Band"....Gary
Bordies was really thumpin' on the bass.....take me to outta space, Gary!!
The "Stretchin' Out" song included snippets of "Cholly (Funk
Gettin' Ready To Roll)". Neil Hazel-Knox was excellent as lead vocalist
for "Cosmic Slop" and MC Moe was very good as the featured rapper on
the hip-hop number "Fread is Dead"! Eric "Boogie" Wilson
was fantastic on "Funk Connection Y2K" and "Fly on the
Wall", with keyboard riffs that were as smelly as chitlins!!! John Purvis
did a great solo on "Fly on the Wall", with riffs so earth-shattering
that he could shatter windows in a two-mile radius!! Pat D'Auria was the
featured bassist and lead vocalist for her song "Why Bother?".....why
bother downplaying this wonderful performance by Pat!!! "Maggot Brain" was DA BOMB with a fantastic solo by
John.....an excellent solo that had the club patrons in NAPPY SPACE!! John held
a note for about 30 seconds! (Note to the Nappyhead band: If John Purvis is
doing the solo for "Maggot Brain", the group needs another guitar
player to do the rhythm guitar part).
