FRIDAY 7/19/02:
At 12:25am, the Nappyhead Funk Army's 4th
Anniversary Celebration started with some of that "Funk Army Mesh",
followed by the infectious "Funk Infection Y2K+2", where The Pearl
gave up the funk with some funkafied, intergalactic synthesized riffs!! The
Pearl continued on his mission to funk up Da Funky Phish (funkin' in the KEY of
life) on "Fly on the Wall" as Red Hot and #9 hit 'em hard on lead
vocals!!
"Every Dog Has Its Day" and "Dirty
Vamp" were delightful, but the most interesting thing was that during
"Tear the Roof Off the Sucka", the electricity went out in the club,
leaving a pitch-black room with some folks shining the flashlights.....in the
face of all disaster, the Nappyhead Funk Army STILL prevailed in the quest to
funk everybody up......the audience was giving up the funk even stronger
against the backdrop of the musicians & vocalists singing aloud and the
drummer, The Technician, holding up the funky beat!!!! THE NAPPYHEAD FUNK ARMY
MEAN SERIOUS BUSINESS AND NOTHING.....NOTHING WILL DEFEAT THEM!!!! People were
jammin' as the Army included pieces of "Pumpin' It Up" and the Atomic
Dog's "Bow wow wow yippy-yo yippy-yay" chant! Five minutes later, the
electricity was restored and the band finished up "Tear the Roof Off the
Sucka"!
"I Got a Thang, You Got a Thang, Everybody's
Got a Thang" sounded so funky with the audience choir singing along, and
then it was time for.........."Red Hot Momma"!!! A hot song featuring
the most lethal axe-slayers known in the funk military, Groovalicious and Andre
Lassalle!! Red Hot got so sexy on "Sexy MF" that she needed to mix in
some Vanity 6 shit....like "Nasty Girl"! #9 did some vocals over the
"Sexy MF" tune......stuff from James Brown's "Sex Machine"
and "Get on the Good Foot", while Eric-Jay included a favorite
Mystikal chorus called "Shake Ya Ass"! The music of "Undisco
Kidd" got the fans a-groovin'! "Jungle Boogie" was good, but the
funky bassman, The General, provided some strong bass on "It's What I Do,
It's What I Am"! Topping that audience was the odorious bass riffs and
tasty lead guitarisms by Groovalicious on "Bottoms Up"!! (Speaking of
bottoms, what is up with Eric-Jay and that army fatigue diaper?????? HA HA HA
HA!!!) "If Anybody Gets Funked Up (It's Gonna Be You)" was good, but
da serious bomb was "Atomic Dog"......Prez was the star as he gave up
some fiery, soaring, heavy synthesized riffs on his "remote keyboard"
and practically danced about onstage!!!!!!!!! (It was too much funk for one
brother to take.....including one, cool soul brother dressed as UNDERCOVER
BROTHER!!!!) The drumming on the intro to "Cosmic Slop" was very
good, but the guitar power seemed to be lacking in the beginning of the
instrumental breakdown! The show ended at 2:30am.
SATURDAY 7/20/02:
At 12:20am, the Nappyhead Funk Army began
their second set of the 4th Anniversary Celebration with some "Funk Army
Mesh" and "Funk Infection Y2K+2", which featured some spaced-out
funky transmissions by the synthesizer man, Prez!!! The biggest change in the band was the amazing Groovalicious
(guitarist), who was wearing.......A LONG, RED WIG WITH AN ARMY
GENERAL HAT!!!!! (HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!) "Fly on the Wall", "Tear the Roof Off
the Sucka" and "Every Dog Has Its Day" were good, but
"Dirty Vamp" was better with solo vocals by Red Hot and a noxious,
ever-so-nasty lead guitar solo by Andre!!! The lead guitar solo by Groovalicious
was ever-so-brutal on "Red Hot Momma"!! Lots of beautiful women were
shaking their moneymakers onstage for "Sexy MF"! "Jungle
Boogie", "Cholly" and "Undisco Kidd" were good, but
The General did a serious bass workout for "It's What I Do, It's What I
Am" and put his good, funky bottom (bass) up for "Bottoms Up"!!
Prez got off (again) on some insane, intergalactic excursion on the remote
synthesizer for "Atomic Dog/Pumpin' It Up"!!! "Cosmic Slop"
was followed by the Nappyhead instrumental theme........HEY, IT'S STAR WARS
MEET THE NAPPY-FUNK GALAXY...AND HERE COMES CAPTAIN #9!!!! "Unfunky
UFO" featured Groovalicious's (sans the red wig & police hat) rocking
lead guitar intro and The Synthesized Duo's (The Pearl and Prez) funky synth
grooves!!! Have no fear....The Technician was there to provide some strong
drumbeats for "Party Up in Here"!!
The encore performance featured the Nappyhead
Funk Army original, "Funkemiftheycan'ttakeajoke".....the bridge parts
were pretty subtle yet still funky as you listened to the richness of the bass
(provided by The General) and the funkiness of the keyboards (provided by The
Funky PREZident)!!!
The Nappyhead Funk Army party weekend ended at 2:30am.
