Big Rob, in his "dog" costume.....I think he's a Dalmatian!
I walked into the club a little late (at 9:30pm) to
hear Zapp do a good version of "Be Alright". Funkier still was the
funky "Doo Wah Diddy".....honestly, even though I found this
performance to be very good, I felt it wasn't as funky or smokin' as the good
ole days. There was a fat rapper named Big Rob who did the rap to the
groove of Chic's "Good Times" (who was that old school rapper who did
that song back in the early 80's? What was the name of that song?) That s ong
was followed by Big Rob running around, trying to avoid another bandmember who
is disrobing him piece by piece.....HEY, TAKE YOUR MIND OUTTA THE GUTTER!! BIG
ROB WAS WEARING A DOG COSTUME UNDERNEATH!! Zapp did "Atomic Dog"
while Big Rob and 2 band members did a dog dance!
Vocalist Nicole Carter did a great rendition of Cheryl Lynn's "Got To Be
Real". Original ZAPP drummer, Lester
Troutman, did a killer drum solo during "Sexual Healing"!!! Gregory Jackson did the lead vocals for the Marvin
Gaye classic. Zapp tackled small portions of The Commodore's "Brick
House", Rick James's "Mary Jane", Parliament's
"Flashlight", Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff", and
"Earth, Wind & Fire's "Let's Groove". Keyboards were very
funky and very dominant during this show! "Computer Love" featured a
live talkbox vocalist! That song and "I Wanna Be Your Man" were good,
but "More Bounce to the Ounce" stunked up the place with highly
explosive funk!!! The bass licks were FONKAY!! Zapp ended the show at 10:45pm.
